At Least 1 Dead, Multiple Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Louisiana Shore

Seacore Power

Seacore Power, a commercial vessel off the shore of Louisiana, capsized on Tuesday. Out of the 19-person crew, 6 people have been rescued, 12 are missing at the time of this writing, and 1 is confirmed to have died.

The U.S. Coast Guard in the area and several other commercial and possibly privately-owned vessels are still conducting rescue efforts in search of others. The first rescue crew arrived only 30 minutes after the initial capsize report came in. Rescuers are still hopeful that survivors could be trapped inside the vessel, where pockets of air could remain breathable for hours or days longer.

It is not known at this time what caused the ship to capsize. However, meteorological reports in the region show steady, strong wind with gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour. The waves in the area, which capsized less than 10 miles south of Port Fourchon, were believed to be 50-feet high or greater. The National Weather Service had warned of the intense wind and waves in the region before the capsize event, so it is not known if the captain of the Seacore Power knew of the rough seas before entering them.
