New Orleans Man Sues for Maritime Storm Injuries
Attorneys Richard A. Chopin and Justin M. Chopin of The Chopin Law Firm are proud to represent Tomas Alvarez in his injury case. Alvarez is suing Central Boat Rental Inc., the M/V Miss Pamela, ABC Insurance Company, and XYZ Insurance Company, alleging that the negligent actions of these entities created an unsafe working environment.
Alvarez was working on the barge in the Gulf of Mexico last April when stormy weather caused it to lose control. While trying to control the vessel, Alvarez fell and was severely injured. Alvarez claims in the suit that the listed defendants did not properly train the crew members on board the vessel, did not properly supervise the crew members, failed to properly train them for how to safely operate in stormy weather, and failed to warn crew members of the imminent danger created by the storm.
According to Alvarez’s suit, damages caused by medical expenses, pain, and mental anguish are estimated to total approximately $4 million. The suit itself seeks $4.5 million, punitive damages, attorney fees, and all taxable costs allowed by law.
A maritime injury, such as that suffered by Mr. Alvarez, can be a sudden and devastating occurrence. The Gulf of Mexico is no stranger to severe weather at sea, as the warmer temperature of the ocean has made it a hotbed for intense storms. This makes boat operation dangerous on these seas, and means that crew members must be properly trained to minimize the risk of a dangerous and potentially devastating injury.
Some of the most common injuries that occur at sea include:
- Slip and falls
- Falling or loose equipment
